Jessica and Michael knew exactly how they wanted their wedding to feel: colorful, cool, stylish, and full of energy. Most importantly, they wanted to have a genuinely great time with their people.

Their Julia Ideson Library wedding gave us a pretty incredible backdrop to work with. The historic architecture, dark wood, marble, and rows of books brought plenty of character on their own, which meant we could have some fun with the design. And we did.

Designing a Colorful Julia Ideson Library Wedding

Jessica and Michael hired Water to Wine Events for Guided Planning + Design, so our job was to help take their ideas, build them into a cohesive design, and then make sure all of those creative pieces actually worked together on the wedding day.

The original design direction was colorful, eccentric, whimsical, bold, celebratory, and maximalist. We paired olive green with punchy shades of orange, red, pink, purple, and yellow, then brought in plenty of unexpected texture and shape.

Amor del Bueno took that vision and absolutely ran with it.

For the ceremony, sculptural floral arrangements climbed white pedestals along the front steps of the library, creating an entrance that felt modern and artful against the building’s historic façade. Inside, the flowers became even more playful—single-variety arrangements, unusual vessels, fruits and vegetables mixed into the tablescapes, and florals that felt intentionally a little weird in all the right ways.

The design wasn’t about making everything match. It was about making everything belong.

We mixed olive velvet linens with lighter neutral tables, layered in hand-illustrated menus and stationery, and let oranges, lemons, tomatoes, eggplants, and other produce become part of the tablescape alongside the flowers. The result was colorful and maximal without competing with the Julia Ideson Library itself.

Jessica and Michael also found thoughtful ways to make the design personal to them and specific to the venue. One of my favorite elements was their ofrenda, incorporated directly into the library shelves with family photographs, flowers, papel picado, and other meaningful pieces.

And because you can’t have a wedding at a library without having at least a little fun with the books, Jessica hand-folded book pages to create sculptural pieces for their seating chart. We displayed them against deep olive panels with florals growing along the base, turning something functional into its own little installation. It was clever, personal, and felt completely at home at a Julia Ideson Library wedding.

A Wedding That Was Actually Fun to Attend

As much as we love the design, a wedding still has to work.

Jessica and Michael wanted to celebrate with their friends without spending the night answering questions, checking on vendors, or worrying about what needed to happen next. That’s a big part of what our team is there for.

And their people came ready to celebrate. The room was full of the kind of friends who were kind, happy, supportive, and very committed to having a good time. By the time the dance floor opened, the energy of the entire wedding made perfect sense.

This wedding at Julia Ideson Library is such a good example of what we love to create at Water to Wine Events: weddings with a strong point of view that still feel like real people live there. Beautiful, yes. But also personal, energetic, a little unexpected, and very much their own.
