The Bryan Museum’s History
The Bryan Museum, originally The Galveston Children’s Home – an orphan’s asylum from 1895 until it partially collapsed in the storm of 1900 – has transformed into a beacon of culture and history in Galveston, still serving the public today as a museum of Texas history and art. One unique benefit of having your wedding at The Bryan Museum is that your guests receive complimentary access to the museum’s exhibits the day of and day after your wedding, providing not just a gorgeous backdrop, but an immersive weekend experience.
Garden Ceremony
If you’re having a ceremony on-site for your Bryan Museum wedding, your guests will be welcomed through the gates in front of the Conservatory where they will later return for an al fresco cocktail hour, and led down the winding path through the butterfly garden to the Gazebo, a nearly 20’ domed structure covered in climbing jasmine and surrounded by brick columns and lush landscape. The paved space where your guests will sit to watch you exchange your vows has a newly erected awning that is expansive enough to provide shade, yet tall enough not to encroach on your photos.
Conservatory Reception
The real show stopper and most unique space on the grounds is the Conservatory at The Bryan Museum. A magnificent feat of emerald glass and intricate metalwork, The Conservatory lends itself to a wide range of wedding design styles – whether you want the drama of the sliding french doors opening to reveal the chandeliers down the center of the room, or envision an ethereal garden-inspired dinner in a greenhouse – The Conservatory is one of the most coveted and unlike-any-other wedding venues in Galveston or Houston. The terrace on the side of the conservatory can be tented (which I strongly recommend, regardless of time of year) or left uncovered, and is the perfect place for dancing as well as all of the “other” things you might need for your reception – buffet tables, photo booth, etc. If you intend to have more than about 100 guests, you’ll want to have dancing outside, as space inside the conservatory is limited.
Architectural Beauty and Coastal Charm Everywhere you Look
One of my favorite aspects of a Bryan Museum wedding, is that every space is beautiful in one way or another – the lush gardens and gazebo, grand greenhouse-like conservatory, stately museum staircase, trickling fountain, and even the perimeter gate. . . everywhere you look there is an opportunity for gorgeous photos. Moreover, The Bryan Museum’s location in the heart of Galveston just between the Seawall and The Strand provides easy access for guests to nearby accommodations and attractions, making it an ideal choice for those wishing to extend their celebrations into a mini-vacation.
A Rain Plan as Beautiful as “Plan A”
Worried about the unpredictable island weather? We have quite literally produced a wedding in a hurricane here – which I don’t exactly encourage, but really, we’ve seen it all. Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some commonly asked questions our clients have when planning their wedding at The Bryan Museum:
Q: What is the capacity inside the conservatory?
A: You can fit up to 140 guests inside for a seated dinner if you’re having dancing outside under a tent, but 120 is more comfortable. If you want both dinner and dancing inside, 100 is really the ideal number. You can fit a bit more, but then you compromise space and guest comfort.
Q: Do I have to use their vendors?
A: The Bryan Museum allows you to use licensed and insured vendors of your choosing in most categories, only requiring you to use their in-house bar, security, and preferred tent/rental company.
Q: Can I use real candles?
A: No. Only LED candles are allowed on the property.
Q: What style of wedding looks best in the Conservatory?
A: That’s the great part – We’ve designed just about every style of wedding in this space, and it looked AMAZING. Colorful mid-century island chic, classic black and white, serene coastal blues and greens, earthy and bold autumnal tones, and a sultry jazz-club cocktail lounge. Every couple has the opportunity to make the space uniquely their own!
Q: Is there a “bridal suite” or dressing room we can use to get ready in?
A: There is a beautiful and cozy “bridal suite” available at 2pm if you’re having your ceremony on-site, but it is not large enough for your wedding party to get ready in. We encourage our couples and wedding parties to get ready off-site at a beach house or other house rental, and arrive to The Bryan for mock “getting ready” photos. Sometimes just the marrying couple will arrive with hair & makeup done and get dressed in the dressing rooms for photos. There is a larger “grooms room” available at 3pm, if that allows enough time for the guys to get dressed.
Q: What time can we have our wedding?
A: Events at The Bryan can start as early as 5pm, and end as late as 10pm. If you’re having a ceremony on-site the timeline looks like:
- 5:00pm Ceremony
- 5:30 Cocktail hour
- 6:30 Dinner & dancing
- 9:55 Last dance & grand exit
If you’re hosting your reception only, you can start at 6pm, or add an additional hour to include a cocktail hour at 5pm.
Q: What are some things to consider for a Bryan Museum wedding?
A: Wind! Wind is a big factor when considering outdoor decor like signage, escort cards, and photos.
Another consideration is your inclement weather plan – NOT just a rain plan. That means extreme wind, cold, and heat in addition to rain. We always encourage our clients to have a tent, regardless of time of year. That way if you are unable to have your ceremony out by the gazebo, you know you have a solid plan in place. And while we are talking about tents – although beautiful, a clear tent in summer sun (or even late spring/early fall) can make your guests feel like ants under a magnifying glass.
